The Citizen Security Secretariat of Mexico City (SSC) issued an alert regarding the risk of an increase in rituals involving the abuse and sacrifice of domestic animals.
The alert specifically focuses on black dogs and cats during October and November, the dates when the Day of the Dead and Halloween are celebrated.
According to the official statement, these practices cause suffering and pain to animals, often leading to their death, and constitute acts sanctioned by local laws.
The department called on citizens to take extreme precautions and protect their companions during this season.
«The life of animals is not a ritual; they deserve to live without fear or suffering.»
Among the SSC's recommendations are: • Avoid giving black animals up for adoption during this period, unless it is to trusted individuals or certified shelters; • Do not let animals go out alone; • Keep yards and rooftops under surveillance to prevent possible theft or abuse.
Furthermore, the capital authorities urge the public to report any suspicious situation that may constitute abuse, such as illegal sales, removal, or unusual transportation of animals, as well as cases of evident violence.
Complaints can be channeled through the Secretary's Contact Unit at phone number 55 5208 9898 or via the official account on X @SSC_CDMX.
